What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that can help improve sagging skin to reveal a more appealing neckline and facial contour.

A neck lift will improve loose, sagging skin of the neck but will not help the fine crepe-paper appearance of someone with very thin skin.

Neck lift procedure options

The type of technique used for a neck lift procedure depends on several factors, such as the degree of skin excess and laxity, and the presence of fatty tissue.

Traditional neck lift

The traditional neck lift incision begins in front of the ear lobe and loops under and behind the ear, ending in the scalp towards the back of the neck. An additional small incision under the chin may be made to tighten the platysma muscles.

Posterior neck lift

This technique involves a single incision inside the hairline at the back of the neck, and will depend on the degree of lifting required. This procedure is a good alternative to a full or lower facelift for patients with minimal or no jowl sagging.

Neck liposuction

Excess fat of the neck can be removed either directly or with the assistance of liposuction. Facial liposuction is a relatively minimally invasive surgical procedure. This approach is best suited to patients with excess fatty tissue and minimal excess neck skin.

Combination approach

A neck lift can be performed in conjunction with a facelift or as a stand-alone procedure.

How is a neck lift performed?

During a typical neck lift procedure, the platysma muscles of the neck, which weaken and separate with age, are tightened and sewn back together in the centre. In some cases the surgeon may choose to remove a small part of the muscle to further reduce the appearance of skin laxity and neck banding. Tissue and skin can also be elevated to a more youthful position during the procedure.

A small amount of skin trimming is performed as needed and the incisions are closed, followed by a support bandage.

Neck lift recovery time

Bruising and swelling are a part of any surgical procedure. Swelling and bruising should typically subside in 7—10 days, after which most patients can return to normal everyday activities.

Final results can take several months to become evident. It is important to understand, neck lift surgery is a very individualised procedure and results may vary.

This surgery is essentially the lower section of a facelift and can be useful in someone who has aging of the neck that is out of proportion to the rest of the face. It is also useful when a person does not desire to go through the more extensive surgery that is involved with a more complete facelift.

You are likely to be uncomfortable for several days to a week. Any post-operative pain is usually easily controlled with medication and this is also organised for when you go home.

All medical procedures carry some risks as well as potential benefits. There are general surgical risks such as bruising, bleeding, blood clots, and infection involved with a neck lift.

Bruising and swelling is common and will resolve in a matter of days. Bleeding at the time of operation is well controlled but can occur after, and may collect as a haematoma. If a haematoma is large enough it may need to be drained.

Poor wound healing and scars that are too obvious are troublesome, but uncommon. There are treatments available to help to manage these problems.

Although extremely uncommon, injury to nerves may cause abnormal movement patterns and infection can become serious if not treated immediately. All patients are treated with antibiotics to help prevent infection. Severe infections may cause skin necrosis and loss of tissue, which will need to be repaired.

General anaesthetics are a safe procedure but they too carry potential risks, including blood clots, lung problems and even death.

Despite the risks, when performed by an experienced practitioner, a neck lift is a very safe procedure and has a high level of patient satisfaction.
