What is an arm lift?

Arm lift surgery is performed by Dr John Flynn to remove the excess skin and fat tissue that may hang from under surface of the arm. Many patients refer to this concern as “tuck shop arms.” This skin is often present due to significant weight loss, genetics or simply part of the ageing process.

Arm lift plastic surgery

Brachioplasty surgery usually takes two to three hours to perform. The procedure is done under "twilight" sedation (a combination of local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation) or general anaesthesia.

In order to remove the unwanted skin, an incision is made from near the elbow into the armpit. The skin and fat are gently elevated off the underlying muscles of the arm and the excess skin and fat are removed. Then the skin is re-draped over the underlying muscles. The incisions are carefully closed to minimise scarring.

A sterile dressing is applied to the incisions and a compression garment is placed over your arms. This compression garment or binder helps support your arms during healing, decreases post-operative swelling and helps decrease any bruising that may occur. Initial healing usually occurs in 10-14 days.

Arm lift surgery scars

Scarring is inevitable with arm lift surgery. However, your scars will continue to fade over time and will become less and less noticeable.

Arm lift surgery recovery

You should be up and walking the day following surgery, although your arms will be sore for several days. You should able to resume your normal daily activities within several days following surgery, and you should be able to resume all of your physical activities within three weeks of surgery.

Arm lift surgery results

You will notice an improvement in your arm contour immediately. However, your shape will continue to improve in the following weeks as the mild swelling subsides. The results will continue to become more evident in 2-3 months.
