Breast lift procedure

Breast lift surgery involves moving the position, shape and size of the nipple/areola complex, remove excess skin and reshape the breast tissue.

Although a breast lift does not alter the amount of breast tissue a woman has, it can change the shape dramatically.

Breast lift incision

The appropriate technique and incision pattern is determined according to the size, shape and degree of sagging of the breast, as well as the position and size of the areola (outer nipple).

There are three types of breast lift incision techniques. These are performed depending on the amount of lift needed.

  • Around the areola
  • Around the areola and then vertically down the breast
  • Around the areola, vertically down the breast and horizontally along the breast crease.

Once the incision has been made, the excess skin is removed and the nipple and areola are then repositioned.   During a breast lift the nipple needs to be lifted and reshaped to appear smaller, rounder and more in proportion with the new breast.  The skin that surrounds the areola is brought together to contour and reshape the breast in keeping with the patients desires.

A combination approach

Mastopexy can be performed as a single operation as a lift or as part of a breast reduction or breast augmentation procedure.

Breast reduction and lift

On occasions a breast reduction may need to be performed if there is a concern as to size of the breast.  This procedure will alter the size of the breast by removing varying degrees of breast tissue as well as improving shape and lifting the nipple/areola complex.

Breast lift with implants

A breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation is known as a mastopexy augmentation. This procedure is particularly appealing to women who want to increase the volume of their breasts, as well as restore breast and areola position.

Breast lift surgery scars

All breast lift procedures leave permanent scars, which, while red initially, will usually fade within six to 12 months.

Breast lift surgery risks

All cosmetic procedures carry potential risks, as well as the desired benefits. There are general surgical risks such as bruising, bleeding, blood clots and infection. This is significantly reduced when an experienced doctor performs the surgery. Bruising is common and will resolve quickly, usually in a matter of days.

Bleeding can occur and will need to be addressed if persistent. It may need to be drained if the collection (haematoma) is large enough. Drains are commonly used in conjunction with breast lift surgery, which helps to minimise the risks of bleeding.

As part of the post-operative, patients will be treated with antibiotics to help prevent infection. Infection is uncommon but can occur. If not treated immediately, the infection can become severe and cause skin necrosis and loss of tissue.

Unevenly positioned breast or nipples (asymmetry) can occur. There may be changes to the sensitivity of nipples.
